A guardrail is a decision, not a feature
"Guardrails" sounds technical. In practice it is a set of deliberate answers to plain questions:
- What may the AI touch? Which data, which systems, which actions are in bounds — and which are off-limits entirely.
- What always needs a human? The decisions that must never go out without a person signing off — anything that reaches a customer, moves money, or changes a record of truth.
- How are mistakes caught? The checks, the logging, the review points that mean an error is spotted by you, not by your client.
- Where does the data go? Which tools are approved, what stays private, and what is never pasted into a public model.
Set these well and your team gets to move fast without having to be security experts. Leave them unset and every person is quietly making these calls alone, differently, all day.
