Where does your AI-built app actually live?

Building the app was the visible part. Then comes a quieter question that AI tools rarely answer: where does the thing actually live? A prototype that runs on your laptop is not a product. The moment real people need to reach it, at a real address, reliably, at 3am on a Sunday, you have crossed from "I built an app" into "I am running infrastructure" — whether you meant to or not.

This is the layer nobody demos, and it is exactly the layer that decides whether your app is an asset or a liability.

1. Somewhere to run

A SaaS platform runs itself; you just log in. A custom app needs a server environment that is provisioned, configured and kept secure — and configured badly, it is either down when you need it or wide open when you don't. This is not a one-time setup; it is an ongoing responsibility.

2. A database that is actually backed up

Your app's data — customers, orders, pipeline — lives in a database. If that database has no automated backups and no tested restore, you do not have a backup; you have a hope. The day you need it is the worst possible day to discover it was never real.

3. A deployment you can repeat

How does a change get from "it works on my machine" to "it works for everyone", without breaking what already runs? A reproducible, one-command deployment is the difference between an app you can safely improve and one you are afraid to touch.

4. A domain, DNS and certificates

Your app needs a real address, a valid security certificate that renews before it expires, and DNS that points where it should. These are small things — until one of them lapses silently and your app is unreachable, or flagged as unsafe, with no obvious cause.

5. Someone who knows when it breaks

Without uptime monitoring and error tracking, the first person to notice your app is down is a customer — and by then the damage is done. Knowing before they do is not a luxury; it is the baseline for running anything a business depends on.
