Vibe coding: 10 things missing from a CRM built by AI
A CRM you generate in a weekend looks complete — until real sales, real users and real data arrive. The gaps that show up, and why they matter.
"Vibe coding" — describing what you want and letting AI build it — is a fast way to a custom CRM that fits exactly how you sell. We are seeing more teams do it, and it is often a smart move. But a CRM is a system of record, and systems of record have requirements a demo never surfaces.
Here are the ten gaps we most often find in an AI-built CRM, roughly in the order they hurt.
- 1. Roles and permissions. Sales reps seeing each other's pipeline, or anyone able to delete records, is common by default.
- 2. Audit trail. No history of who changed what and when — essential the first time a deal value "mysteriously" changes.
- 3. Data validation. Duplicate contacts, malformed emails and free-text where there should be a list quietly rot the data.
- 4. Import/export. Getting data in and out cleanly is often an afterthought, and it is exactly what you need on day one and on the day you migrate.
- 5. Integrations. A CRM that does not talk to email, invoicing and your website creates the manual re-keying it was meant to remove.
- 6. Reporting you can trust. Dashboards that look right but double-count or miss records are worse than no dashboard.
- 7. Notifications and workflow. Follow-ups, assignments and reminders are what make a CRM get used rather than abandoned.
- 8. Backups. A pipeline is a business asset; losing it is a real event, not a hypothetical.
- 9. Scalability. What is instant with 200 records can crawl with 200,000 if the queries were never designed for it.
- 10. Maintainability. When the person who "vibed" it moves on, someone has to understand and evolve it.
Keep it or move to a platform?
Sometimes the right answer is to harden the custom CRM — it fits your process and rebuilding would lose that. Sometimes a platform like Zoho gives you roles, audit, reporting and backups out of the box and you are better served moving the system of record there and keeping custom only where it is a real differentiator. The decision should be deliberate, not accidental.
